About
I am a historian of Japan and of medicine in the modern era (19th-20th centuries). I began my position as a lecturer in the Department of East Asian Studies a few years ago, after completing my PhD studies at the History of Science Program at Princeton University. I research different aspects of the history of medicine. Among others I explore the history of the body, i.e. the changing historical ways in which people experienced, interpreted, cultivated, treated and maintained their body; the history of medical treatment and the resulting relationships that developed between medical practitioners and patients; the history of medical care and the development of the nursing profession; and the history of public health systems and their influence on daily life, the environment and the worldviews of both the general population and medical practitioners.
I research the social and cultural history of medicine, examining how medicine developed, influenced society, and was influenced by it. My current research focuses on the history of military medicine in Japan in the modern era. More specifically, I explore the development of a new role in Japan and the world at the time – the military medic or corpsman – as a prism for understanding the concomitant wider processes of medical militarization and military medicalization.
